Even if you’re the most attentive parent on earth, there’s a very good chance your little one is going to get a diaper rash at some point. It happens.

Their teeny tiny bodies have very sensitive skin, making them susceptible to the dry, red and painful condition known as a diaper rash.

While some diaper rashes can be worse than others, the first thing you should reach for is a good, natural diaper rash cream.

Unfortunately, like many baby products, there are some nasty diaper rash creams out there.

We’re talking products that are full of nasty chemicals and harmful ingredients, and since they’re coming into direct contact with your little one’s privates, this is a terrible, terrible thing.

Luckily, there are a few choices out there for good, non-toxic and natural diaper rash creams. Let us be your guide and help you make a safe choice.

Nasty ingredients in diaper rash creams.

Here’s a list of chemicals that can be found in some diaper rash creams that you should definitely avoid.

Why do manufacturers have to put these horrible ingredients in baby products? It’s really disgusting and horrifying.

  • Fragrance: Like many products, a lot of diaper rash creams have chemical fragrances. These are bad because they can constitute a laundry list of unknown chemicals that the manufacturer doesn’t need to disclose
  • Boric acid / sodium borate: This is a potential skin irritant, which is even worse because diaper rash cream is typically applied to broken skin.
  • Parabens: Chemical preservatives that have been linked to breast cancer and other health issues.
  • Petrolatum: Otherwise known as petroleum jelly, a petroleum-derived product that clogs skin pores. What’s worse is that due to improper refining, it’s sometimes contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are linked to cancer.
  • Talc: Horrible ingredient that is a close relative to—and sometimes contaminated with—asbestos, an extremely carcinogenic compound that is linked to both lung cancer and ovarian cancer. Needless to say, this should be nowhere near a baby’s privates.
  • Benzyl Benzoate / Benzyl Salicylate: Linked with endocrine disruption, also environmental toxins.
  • Hydrogenated oils: These are oils that are taken and chemically processed. Better to take the natural, unprocessed version.
  • Lanolin: This one may come as a surprise to you, but lanolin should be avoided. Lanolin is essentially an excretion of a sheep’s skin. The problem is that sheep are often sprayed directly with pesticides to fight off mites and other pests. Lanolin can legally contain up to 40 parts per million (PPM) of pesticides to be FDA-compliant. Not to mention that sheep are essentially always fed a diet of genetically modified and chemical-sprayed grain and alfalfa.

Preventing diaper rashes from happening in the first place.

Prevention is the best medicine, and there are a few things to be aware of to make sure your little guy has the least risk of developing a rash as possible.

  1. Give the diaper some room to breathe. It shouldn’t be as tight a possible to allow some air to circulate.
  2. Change diapers on the regular. If your little one seems to get rashes more frequently than other babies, try changing the diaper more often.
  3. Let your little one go diaper free as much as possible. This helps their bottom stay dry, and a wet bottom is prone to developing a rash.
  4. Use organic, non-toxic diapers. A lot of disposable diapers these days are filled with plastics and toxic ingredients that can cause skin irritaiton.
  5. Use baby wipes sparingly. The constant rubbing of the wipe can irritate the skin.
  6. Let baby’s bottom completely dry out during diaper changes. This one is self-explanitory.
